Let’s be honest: most of us will eat candy on Halloween. And that’s okay.
But not all candy affects your teeth the same way. Some treats stick to your enamel, feed harmful bacteria, and raise your risk for cavities. Others rinse away more easily.
Knowing the difference can help you enjoy the holiday and protect your smile.
The Worst Offenders
You’ll want to be careful with these:
- Sticky candies – Think taffy, gummies, caramel. They cling to your teeth and stay there.
- Sour candies – High in acid, which weakens enamel before you even chew.
- Hard candies – Long-lasting sugar exposure + risk of chipping a tooth? Not a great combo.
- Lollipops – Same problem. They sit in your mouth too long and bathe your teeth in sugar.
These are the candies most likely to leave behind damage—even if you brush right after.
Better Candy Choices
Look for options that dissolve quickly or don’t stick:
- Plain chocolate (no nuts, caramel, or crunch)
- Peanut butter cups
- Powdery candy like Smarties
- Soft chocolate chip cookies
These don’t hang around on your teeth as long, making them less risky.
Simple Tips to Reduce the Damage
Eat candy with meals instead of snacking all day
- Drink water while you snack
- Wait 30 minutes after eating before brushing (to protect softened enamel)
- Brush and floss before bed—even if you’re tired
If you or your child had a lot of sweets, consider booking a post-Halloween cleaning. We can help clear out the buildup and check for any early signs of trouble.
Enjoy your candy. Just be smart about it.
