April Raises Awareness On Oral Cancer, Facial Protection

Dentistry Today  (3/31) reports that April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, which aims to highlight “the prevalence of the disease and the importance of early diagnosis in improving survival rates.” This year “54,000 new cases of oral cancer will be diagnosed,” and “43% of them won’t survive longer than five years.” The death rate remains high since “these cancers are routinely discovered late in their development.” The article reports that “regular oral cancer examinations performed by oral health professionals remain the best method for detecting oral cancer in its early stages, said the Oral Cancer Foundation, which is promoting its Check Your Mouth  initiative as part of the campaign.”
In addition, Dr Bicuspid  (4/1, Pablos) reports that “April 1 marks the start of National Facial Protection Month, which can be the perfect time to talk with patients and families about mouthguards and other tools to protect against sports injuries.”
